Bryce Canyon National Park is a scientist's laboratory and a child's playground. Because Bryce transcends 2000 feet (650 m) of elevation, the park exists in three distinct climatic zones: spruce/fir forest, Ponderosa Pine forest, and Pinyon Pine/juniper forest. This diversity of habitat provides for high biodiversity. Here at Bryce, you can enjoy over 100 species of birds, dozens of mammals, and more than a thousand plant species.
The Dixie National Forest, with headquarters in Cedar City, Utah, occupies almost two million acres and stretches for about 170 miles across southern Utah. The largest National Forest in Utah, it straddles the divide between the Great Basin and the Colorado River.
Cedar Breaks National Monument is a 3-mile wide, 2,500-foot deep amphitheater of wonderfully colored and eroded spires, ridges, and columns of sandstone. It sits 10,200 feet up in the heavy pine forests of the Markagunt Plateau. Cedar Breaks is very much a concentrated version of Bryce Canyon National Park, consisting of just one large amphitheater, rather than Bryce's 18. (It lacks though to some extent the intricacy of Bryce's eroded forms). |
