Enjoying the Ride
Oatman is located on historic Route 66, a town originally named after the Oatman family was attacked and killed by Indians nearby.  Oatman was founded and once thrived due to its proximity to the richest gold mines in the state, which operated from 1904 through 1931. The town population peaked at 10,000 during the mining years, when it produced $36 million in ore.  After the mines closed down, the burros used as pack animals were set free -- but they never left.

Kingman, the Heart of historic Route 66 & one of the hidden treasures of Arizona, is conveniently located on Interstate 40 and is the perfect launching point for "Route 66 and Beyond".  Scenic hiking, historic charm, great cafes and restaurants, and the allure of Route 66 combine to make Kingman a remarkable destination.  The roots of Arizona are captured by the Historic Route 66 Museum that recount the travels on Route 66, depict the World War II era and the early days of railroading, mining and ranching..
